Ko Samui — a beach guide

Ko Samui is definitely one of those places you have to see to believe paradise on Earth exists. Sandy beaches, incredible waterfalls, beautiful temples, and so much more…

Here I want to pause and focus only on the beaches. Whether you’re looking for a quiet spot to sunbathe, a Thai massage to the sound of the waves, sports activities, or nightly beach parties, Ko Samui won’t let you down.

Pick your own patch of sand from my subjective list 🙂

1. CHOENG MON BEACH

Located in the north-east part of Ko Samui. A kilometer long with fine white sand and a gentle entry into the water thanks to the shelter of the bay, which shields it from wind and large waves. An abundance of trees creates an oasis of shade to rest from the scorching sun, and a Thai massage with a bay view. At low tide it can become shallow, so it’s ideal for families with children. Despite the presence of a large hotel, this beach still counts among the quiet ones. In the evenings, local restaurants light lanterns and torches, creating a romantic mood and inviting you to try Thai dishes and seafood.

For whom?

For families with children, couples looking for peace and quiet, places to relax and unwind.

2. CRYSTAL BEACH / SILVER BEACH

On the east side of Ko Samui, one of the smallest beaches on the island (250 meters), it could genuinely be called a paradise. Flanked on both sides by huge boulders, which also rise from the waters of the bay. This place offers ideal conditions for resting under palm trees, swimming, and sunbathing — crystal-clear water, no waves thanks to the bay, and fine, light sand. Sounds perfect, right? So where’s the catch? Unfortunately, on weekends it’s hard to find a spot to lay out a beach towel. Four resorts and several restaurants that open right on the beach, with sunbeds, food, and cold drinks, mean it gets crowded and noisy.

For whom?

For people who want a bit more action on the beach during the day, with easy access to bars and restaurants.

3. MAENAM BEACH

Let’s head to the north of the island and the less-known Maenam Beach. Seven kilometers long, it offers a decent number of bungalows at reasonable prices, with sea views. Although the sand here is coarser and the entry to the water steeper, this beach has one undeniable plus. It’s almost empty! If you choose it, you’ll feel like you’re on a private beach. Along the shoreline, huge palms cast shade you can rest under, away from the scorching sun (just check that an unruly coconut doesn’t fall on your head). Maenam Beach is ideal for walks along the water — personally I recommend heading toward the Maenam Viewpoint. If you prefer quiet spots, the sound of waves, and strolls without crowds of tourists, this beach will meet your expectations.

For whom?

Definitely for people looking for silence, peace, and privacy.

4. CHAWENG BEACH

And if you’re looking for something quite different, I have the perfect suggestion! Chaweng Beach is seven kilometers long and exceptionally wide. Because of its size it’s divided into three parts: North Chaweng, Central Chaweng, and Chaweng Noi. The beach is characterized by fine, light sand and a gentle slope into the water, but also choppier seas. It’s one of the island’s most popular beaches and an integral part of the tourism scene — this is where you’ll find most of the resorts, hotels, and restaurants. You’ll meet both tourists and locals relaxing in the sun or indulging in water activities like jet skis. After sunset, this stretch turns into something completely different — a nightlife hub by moonlight.

For whom?

By day for families with children; by night for those looking for a scene with bars and restaurants.

5. LIPA NOI BEACH

Lipa Noi Beach, on the western side of the island, is one of our favourites. Quiet and peaceful, with pleasant, soft sand, a gentle slope into the water, and the most beautiful sunsets. Because the ferry port is on the neighbouring beach, passenger ferries and catamarans crossing the horizon line are an inseparable part of the landscape. The vegetation is more varied than on other beaches — besides coconut palms there are lots of frangipani and conifers, and of course the best ginger drink (look for it at Anahata).

For whom?

For families with children, people looking for quieter places and romantic sunsets.

6. BANG PO BEACH

West of Maenam Beach lies another very pleasant beach — Bang Po Beach, about 3 km long and 20 m wide. Although the sand is a bit coarser and the bottom isn’t as crystal-clear as at Maenam, it’s worth stopping by, especially if you’re looking for a quiet place to rest under the palms or walk along the water. All the more so because from this beach you can admire the neighbouring island Koh Phangan and the islands of Ang Thong Marine Park.

For whom?

For people looking for quiet beach time and fans of walking along the water.

7. LAMAI BEACH

Lamai Beach is the second-most-popular beach on Ko Samui. On the eastern shore, south of Chaweng Beach and Silver Beach. A long, crescent-shaped beach lined with palm trees, with light, soft sand and calm water — perfect for sunbathing and water sports. This is where you’ll find a few places to rent water skis, kayaks, or jet skis. Lamai is ideal for those who like calm during the day but want to enjoy nightlife in the evening.

For whom?

For families with children, people looking for peace during the day who also don’t want to give up access to restaurants and nightlife.

I hope I’ve captured even a taste of the atmosphere of each beach. As you can see, each is different, each offers something different. And that’s Ko Samui’s biggest strength — everyone will find their own ideal spot on the sand.

And which suits you best? Maybe the calm Choeng Mon Beach by day and lively Chaweng Beach by night? Let me know! 🙂
